I introduced Fryer and yoked him up for a demonstration of his skills. My new friends took a ride on Fryer's fore cart and asked questions on his training because they too are planning on training steers to become oxen on their farm for draft animal power.
It was so inspiring for me to have the opportunity to speak to new folks about what I have been doing with Fryer on our farm here at Chapel Hill Creamery. I really need to do more. And having others keep me on my toes, makes me want to spend more time with Fryer and accomplish jobs on the farm that are perfect for a single ox. Thank you Cailen and Chloe. I look forward to seeing and hearing all about your future oxen. I will keep in touch on workshops that will be coming up soon.
He has turned 7 years old. I wish it could be a cooler day for his special day but I guess I will need to give him a cool bath this evening.
I can't help but think of his twin brother, Breis. He died last Nov. 2015. I wish he was here so we can celebrate both of them.
This fall has a lot of activities scheduled for Fryer. I am looking forward to those more comfortable days.
Happy Birthday, my man.
I think I have myself setup now to start blogging about my Ox, Fryer again. The Dairy (chapelhillcreamery.com) has been so busy that I haven't had much time to spend with Fryer. Not to mention how hot it is.
When I took Fryer to the Blue Ridge Institute back in June, that was the last time I got a good workout with him. Lately the Dairy and Mother nature has put him laying in the shade and chewing his cud. He doesn't mind at all.
But I have lots of plans to get busy with come fall. I want to work on a path this year that I can get Fryer acustume to so he doesn't have to walk on the roads that are full of sharp gravel. Our fence lines that keep our milk cows grazing have nice paths around the outside. I just need to clean them up of brush and high grasses and have him walk them for a nice Ox drive.
I look forward to hearing from you all, so please send me your ideas and thoughts as I get busy posting pictures and videos for Fryer's blog.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541631007377257766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842409966140968538.post-37264865876441283742016-01-28T07:04:00.000-05:002016-01-28T07:04:04.906-05:00Fryer's Blog will be down for a whileHi everybody. I wanted to let my followers know that I will not be blogging for a while due to having to cancel internet service. I also plan to purchase a new computer that is better and more reliable in the things I do.
I am hoping it will only be for a few months because I want to save up some money for the investment. So I am looking forward for starting back up in the spring.
When I come back, I want to, not only, blog about Fryer but include other teamster friends with their oxen. I have learned through Fryer and my ox, Breis who pasted 11-6-2015 that draft animal power is a real accomplishment with the teamster and the animal. To have a relationship with animals willing to work with you and you are able to except the successes along with the limitations to accomplish the work and play you desire is a exciting life filled experience.
I have some new ideas for me and Fryer this spring and we will be attending oxen events to also blog about. If I have blogging withdrawal ;-) I will be posting on Chapel Hill Creamery's facebook page.
Thank you for your interest and I will be back soon. Spring Fever is coming!
I hope everyone is ready to start something new this year. I have a new toy for Fryer and myself. I think?
This is a forcart that I bought at the Troutman aution sale in NC.

I have spent quite a bit of time welding extensions to make the shafts longer and bending the shafts to work under Fryer's yoke. Other then that I have done some spray painting and sprucing up.

I have only walked him in it two times. He is very nervous and it is going to take many more times before I will be comfortable letting him walk without a halter.

I hope that if this forcart works for Fryer, I plan to hook attachments to the forcart to make his pulling a lot more comfortable.

The Britchen has been a saver. I can not believe I have worked this long without one. Even a team of oxen should be wearing britchens if you have heavy loads going down hills. I can see a huge difference in Fryer with the security of the strap around his rump.

If anyone sees any issues with my setup, please let me know. The only piece that is missing from this picture is the hold back straps that connect to the shafts from Fryer's britchen. I have them in place now.

I will be taking videos for all to see when he becomes use to it. Right now both Fryer and myself need to focus on training. I will keep you updated.

I know with all that is going to be happening on the dairy farm in the next three weeks, I probably will not be blogging before the new year. So, I wanted to wish all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thank you for following the blog and supporting Fryer and myself as we continue to practice Ox power at Chapel Hill Creamery.
I look forward to the year 2016, in learning how to work with a single Ox, and continue to work with Kathryn and her steers, Fi and Asha.

I had them over during the weekend of Dec. 12th and 13th for some training in the yoke.
I think I have Fryer's single yoke complete. I worked with him today on pulling his sled and then pulling his tractor tire to make sure the yoke set right on his neck and into his shoulders. I was very pleased and he didn't show me any discomfort.

I plan to go back tomorrow and finish the logging we were working on when the first yoke broke. I plan to watch for Fryer's head placement when he begins to pull on the logs, and to make sure there is no choking to indicate tightness or bow positioning.

I tried my yoke on Fryer but I noticed it seemed to be too top heavy. It would fall over to one side instead of rock back and forth when he walked. I also had the britchen hooked to the yoke and it still looked like it didn't sit properly. I haven't had him pull any implement because I could tell I needed to take more wood off in the yoke seat area. I plan to do this today and try to get a video of Fryer walking in the yoke and pulling something so we can see the bow fall in the shoulder area.

If anyone has some tips for me, please share. My goal is for Fryer to be comfortable so he will be more willing to work with me. Since Breis has passed, Fryer is having a hard time adjusting as a Single Ox.

I should start grinding on the yoke tomorrow. I have the hardware and bow that I can move from the broken yoke.
We were about 4 logs into our work when the single yoke I was using broke. Fryer pulled a log that got caught between two trees on a "gee" turn and caused the yoke to snap. I have to admit, Fryer seemed very happy when I had to pack up and go home. ;-)
That was the week that Breis passed (11-6-15) so it was difficult to talk about my trip at that point. But I feel it is important to discuss the workshop and talk about what it was like to work with Tim Huppe and his staff.

I had a great time logging with this team of professionals. Here at Sanborn Mills we used two teams of Milking Short Horns. Our first workout was to gather fire wood that had already been cut and split. We hauled the wood using Mike and Jake, the older more experienced Oxen.

Then we went in the woods to haul logs using Mike and Jake and I had the pleasure in working Duke, a single ox from the younger pair of short horns.

I learned a lot from Tim and his crew. These people do this every day and they are great at it.There landing sites are clean and organized so it made the logging easier to load logs onto the skids to take to the sawmill. The Percherons they have there at the farm are used to pull the loads of logs to the mill.

Fryer and I are trying to adjust to working without Breis. It has been a challenge because it takes different equipment to work one Ox. Here I have Fryer in a Britchen which is a harness for Oxen.
It helps the Ox use it's body to be able to pull heavier loads, especially down hill. The strap around the rump will keep the load from putting so much weight on the yoke and horns and distributes the weight evenly.
I put the harness on him for the first time today. He wasn't too sure about these straps but he'll get more comfortable the more he wears it. We will be logging tomorrow and Sunday so I hope he fines it to help him more then scare him.
I will be blogging about my trip to Sanborn Mills Farm in a few days. I am trying to get some videos placed on my computer so I can share them with you.
Fryer seems to be a bit different since Breis passed. He is much more quieter and less aggressive. I wish I knew what he is thinking.
The death occurred during the night and was discovered at 5:00 am Friday morning November 6th 2015.
I was in New Hampshire at a Ox Workshop and I didn't arrive home until Saturday the 7th around 1:00.Portia had to tell me the horrible news.
Portia had Breis's body taken to NCSU for an Necropsy to determine the cause of the sudden death. This information is still pending.
The memory of my "off" Steer, Breis will last my lifetime. His twin brother, Fryer and I will honor his name by continuing to bring draft animal power to the beautiful farm of Chapel Hill Creamery. I will train Fryer as a single ox and will continue to blog his progress. Fryer is grieving right now but he is strong. I know he will be successful.
I love you, Breis. I miss you so much.
My original trainer at Sanborn Mills Farm (www.sanbornmills.org) Tim Huppe will be taking time out to work on my skills and advanced training as a teamster. I will be heading to Loudon, New Hampshire this November 4th - 6th to work with his farm Oxen.
We will be doing a bit of logging, improving my skills on hitching options, and we will be working with his single ox. I am very excited about the single ox because when you are in thick woods a single ox makes moving around and pulling logs a bit easier due to the tight surroundings.
I am hoping the weather won't be too cold that it makes me whine. ; - )

I'll bring back pics and videos to share.
Also hurricane, Joaquin, is just around the corner. Wow.
Breis and Fryer might just have to be put up in the barn. Poor Boys ;-)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541631007377257766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842409966140968538.post-47674625011528613082015-09-24T19:31:00.000-04:002015-09-24T19:31:39.701-04:00What's coming up! Oxtoberfest 2015!October the 2nd and 3rd, Fi and Asha, Breis and Fryer will be heading to Galax, Va. again for the Oxtoberfest 2015. This is the 2nd year the oxen have gone to this fun event. You can look back at the blog of 10/26/14 for our first experience.
Kathryn and Ezra will haul Fi and Asha and I will haul Breis and Fryer on Friday afternoon and spend the night for the one day activities on Saturday. Our ox teams preform very well and give new teamsters a fun opportunity to learn to drive and work the oxen. I am very excited about this year because Kendy, the director of the Oxtoberfest, has a gentleman coming to speak on shoeing oxen which all of my blog viewers know I am very interested in.
Kathryn and I have been working our oxen to prepare them for the trip.

This past Sunday Christopher, Kathryn, Ezra, and I worked with Breis in the shoeing stock to trim his front feet. My Shoeing Stock is something I have been working on for a long time and I think I am almost there. It's not the best way to handle my oxen but I can't afford to spend the money on a expensive trimming Chute.
I continue to research the internet and look at pictures to try and improve a way to handle Breis and Fryer's feet in order to improve their walk here on the farm. I feel if I don't get this right, Breis and Fryer will not be able to continue to work in the yoke here at Chapel Hill Creamery. With these aggressive gravel roads, the boys have had too many hoof problem and refuse to work on the roads.
Another idea I am going to be working with is to sample a thin rubber sole and glue them to the bottom of their claws.
If there is anyone out there that has had this experience with the rubber soles, I would love to hear from you. I am interested in learning all I can to take care of my oxen.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10541631007377257766noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842409966140968538.post-76375600892460183712015-08-18T19:55:00.000-04:002015-08-18T19:55:30.378-04:00I'm BackI got back from Wisconsin Sunday evening but it took me a few days to catch up. My hoof trimming experience, to say the least, was fantastic. I learned so much.
Monday through Wednesday we studied cow feet from slaughtered cows so we could see the reason for the culling due to lameness. After lots of practice we worked on-farm Thursday and Friday handling live cows. During this time, we performed functional basic trimming and when there was a problem with a cow we took care of lesions and other claw problems by preforming therapeutic trimming.
Here is just a few pics I took when I was there.

I was able to handle many cows there to feel confident on coming home and applying my new knowledge and skills to our Jerseys. I didn't have the opportunity on learning much for Breis and Fryer except trimming so I will have to continue to study Oxen from a different perspective and other experts. I sure hope I find them soon.
I am so excited to learn all I can about Cow claws and I hope to try shoeing on my ox shoes and get some practice in on that to see if I can begin shoeing Breis and Fryer.
I will learn how to trim our milk cows and spot any disease and/or lesions that can cause lameness.
She took a great picture of the steers for all of us to see how much Fi and Asha have grown.

These guys (Fi and Asha) are growing. Kathryn's steers will be 2 this coming Sept. 25th.

Breis and Fryer will be turning 6 years old this month the 29th.

I have been working on a project for the oxen to trail around our 10 ache pasture. It will be an excellent why to keep the brush from taking over and growing too close to the cow's fence line and also give Breis and Fryer a way to exercise without having to walk on the gravel.

I feel the hardest challenge I have had to face with working oxen is their feet and protecting them from rough roads.
